The North Carolina Gaters 14U basketball team defeated the Charlotte
Royals 54-39 to win their third consecutive state title.
The Gaters, who trailed 17-15 after the first quarter, outscored the
Royals 18-1 in the second stanza to take a commanding 33-18 lead at the
half.
Brandyn Curry, of the Royals, had hit two threes and scored eight points
in the first quarter to help his team to the lead, but good defense and
balanced scoring propelled the Gaters in the second quarter as Coach Vic
Sapps’ troops took control.
Robert Crisp and Wade Goff scored five points each in the second quarter
for the Gaters and team defense smothered the Royals.
Crisp, who dominated play on the inside, led the champions with 12 points
and he was joined in double figures by guards Damien Steadman and
Christian Pulliam, who added 11 and 10 points respectively.
CJ Washington and Jonathan Rice added six and five points for the Gaters,
but more importantly these two forwards were right on time with their hard
work on the boards and on defense.
Ball-hawking guards Pete Singer and Goff were all over the place
disrupting the Royals guards and they also contributed six and five points
to the Gater cause. Kyle Vebber also played important minutes at forward
for the champion Gaters.
Brandyn Curry finished with 18 points to pace the Royals. Curry hit four
three-pointers, while guard Adrian Addie hit three treys as the Royals
